Creep of the Week: John McCain

You can judge a lot about a man based on the company he keeps.
When Louis Farrakhan endorsed Barack Obama this month, Obama was quick to distance himself from the vocally anti-Semitic Nation of Islam leader.
"I have been very clear in my denunciation [of Farrakhan's history of anti-Semitic remarks]," Obama said according to The Wall Street Journal. "I can't say to somebody that he can't say that he thinks I'm a good guy."
And that's true. Anybody can endorse a political candidate, even folks that candidate might not want anything to do with. While politicians are hungry for votes, folks like Obama aren't so desperate that they're going to court the anti-Semite bloc.
So what did John McCain do when he received the endorsement of San Antonio megachurch Cornerstone leader John Hagee, a man who has been outspoken in his dislike for Catholics, gays and women?
McCain lapped it up.
"Well I think it's important to note that pastor John Hagee who has supported and endorsed my candidacy supports what I stand for and believe in," McCain said in a Feb. 29 statement. "When he endorses me, it does not mean that I embrace everything that he stands for and believes. And I am very proud of the Pastor John Hagee's spiritual leadership to thousands of people and I am proud of his commitment to the independence and the freedom of the state of Israel. That does not mean that I support or endorse or agree with some of the things that Pastor John Hagee might have said or positions that he may have taken on other issues."
Indeed, some of those positions are pretty disgusting. He has called Catholicism "the great whore of Babylon" and "a cult," he once held a "slave sale" as a fundraiser at his church ("Slavery in America is returning to Cornerstone" the church bulletin announcement read), and is hot to bomb Iran.
You may also remember that Hagee blamed gays for Hurricane Katrina. In 2006 on NPR's Fresh Air he said, "The newspaper carried the story in our local area that was not carried nationally that there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades. So I believe that the judgment of God is a very real thing. I know that there are people who demur from that, but I believe that the Bible teaches that when you violate the law of God, that God brings punishment sometimes before the day of judgment."
On RaptureReady.com, Hagee is quoted as saying, "America stands at the crossroads. Our destiny as a nation hangs in the balance. America's hope for survival is the anointed preaching of the gospel with such force that the chains of drug addiction, AIDS, Satanism, homosexuality, pornography, divorce and drunkenness are broken."
Keep in mind, this is a guy McCain actively sought out for endorsement.
