BLOOMFIELD HILLS – If you're looking for a fun way to stay warm now that winter weather has returned, turn your feet toward a new dance studio in Bloomfield Hills.
The Fred Astaire Dance Studio on Telegraph Road is one of over 100 franchised outlets of the original company, which was co-founded by the legendary dancer and actor himself.
Astaire "developed a practical, interrelated dance curriculum that embodied the fundamental principles of good dancing, flavored by his style and grace," according to the corporate website. "Our studios offer all kinds of dance instruction – from ballroom to country western to salsa to nightclub dancing – for all ages and abilities through private, group, and practice lessons."
At the Bloomfield Hills location, Keelyn Mahoney said that all kinds of ballroom steps are taught, from salsa to swing. And, right now the studio is offering a special $25, one-time rate to allow prospective students to check out the lessons.
After someone commits to lessons, Mahoney said the average package runs approximately $325. Packages include eight total classes with five private sessions, two group classes and a private dance party for students on Friday nights at 8:30 p.m.
"The method of teaching is different," said Mahoney. "Instead of just saying the steps and giving them the written word of it, we move them through it. It's not as impersonal as a college or something like that where they know you by last name only. It's sort of a family atmosphere. We know dance, let us show it to you."
In addition to the Friday student-only parties, Fred Astaire also holds dance parties on Thursdays that are open to guests of current students for free. The next party is scheduled for Feb. 16 at 8:30 p.m.
And while you don't need a partner to take lessons, Mahoney said that all partners of whatever gender are welcome.
In fact, on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 5-8 p.m. is a 45 minute dance lesson followed by a 2 hour dance party for same-sex couples. The cost is only $50 a couple.
