DeRoche blocks anti-bullying bill

By Dawn Wolfe Gutterman

LANSING – According to a report from the Triangle Foundation, House Speaker Craig DeRoche (R-Novi) has refused to allow movement on House Bill 5616, which if passed would protect Michigan's schoolchildren from bullying.
The bill requires Michigan's school districts to adopt uniform anti-bullying policies that protect all children, including LGBT children.
According to the Triangle release, "Speaker DeRoche is blocking the bill from seeing the light of day, we fear, because it would also grant greater protections to GLBT youth and other minorities."
Speaker DeRoche's office did not return phone calls from BTL seeking his position on the bill.
