El-Sayed Turns Tables on Watters in Fiery Fox News Clash Over Trans Healthcare
Michigan Senate candidate presses Fox host on his own body after 'ding-a-ling' comment
Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed used an unlikely question to expose what he called conservative hypocrisy on medical decisions for minors, asking Fox News host Jesse Watters point-blank whether he's circumcised during a combative interview Monday night on "Jesse Watters Primetime."
El-Sayed, a physician and former Michigan health official, entered the segment hoping for what he called a "good, wholesome conversation." Watters had other plans, pressing him on immigration, Sharia law, the Green New Deal, a proposed wealth tax and gun policy before turning to gender-affirming care for trans youth, according to a transcript published by Mediaite.
"So you think it's OK for a parent to slash his kid's ding-a-ling off?" Watters asked.
El-Sayed didn't answer directly. Instead, he turned the question back on his host.
"Do you really want to have this conversation? Are you circumcised?" El-Sayed asked.
Watters said yes, then bristled. "That's a personal question, doctor," he said, before insisting circumcision is "different than castration." El-Sayed said that objection made his point for him.
"I think it's a problem that you think that you get to decide what happens between a parent, a doctor and a patient," El-Sayed said. "I'm just saying that, yes, circumcision is surgery on a kid's ding-a-ling."
Watters called the answer "sick stuff" and pivoted to transgender athletes. El-Sayed pushed back on the entire framing of the interview rather than just that exchange, telling Watters directly, according to NBC News, "I'm not here to fight a culture war. I'm here to fight the affordability crisis that people are facing." He pointed to grocery and gas prices, healthcare costs and Trump's trade policy as the issues he said Michigan voters actually care about.
Gender-affirming care for trans youth looks nothing like the procedure Watters described. Major medical groups, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, note that surgical intervention isn't offered to prepubertal children. Care for younger kids typically means social support and counseling, with any medical treatment considered later and only in consultation with families and providers.
Neither Watters nor Fox News issued a follow-up statement after the interview aired, and El-Sayed's campaign hasn't released a separate comment beyond what he said on air. The interview came about two weeks after El-Sayed's primary win over U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, a victory that made him one of the most closely watched Democratic candidates of the midterms. He now faces Republican former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers in a race widely seen as a factor in which party controls the Senate.
Reaction to the exchange split predictably along ideological lines. LGBTQ+ outlets including Queerty framed it as a rare moment of a Democrat refusing to play defense on trans issues during a hostile interview. Conservative outlets took the opposite view: Townhall argued El-Sayed "couldn't answer any questions directly," while The Daily Caller noted Watters' camp is likely to use the moment against him down the stretch.
