EMU Theatre goes happily 'Into the Woods'

YPSILANTI
Once upon a time, a songwriter named Stephen Sondheim and a playwright named James Lapine created a musical tale about what happens after "happily ever after". It wasn't long before their story, "Into the Woods," became one of the greatest hits in all the land, earning multiple Tony awards including Best Score for Sondheim and Best Book for Lapine. EMU Theatre will conclude its latest magical season with this story of spells, wishes and slippers. "Into the Woods," directed by Ken Stevens with musical direction by R. MacKenzie Lewis, runs 7 p.m. May 29-30 and June 4-6, and 3 p.m. May 31 in the Sponberg Theatre, located in the Quirk Building at the intersection of East Circle Drive and Best Hall on Eastern Michigan University's Ypsilanti campus.
"Into the Woods" follows the residents of a far away land as they set off to make their wishes come true. The first act follows the guise of a traditional fairy tale, seamlessly weaving together the stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Ridinghood, The Baker and his Wife and other figures from fairy tale history. However, don't let "happily ever after" fool you, as Act II takes you to a deeper and darker neck of the woods with the same characters, their wishes fulfilled yet still unsatisfied, only this time with a vengeful giant in their midst.
The show is recommended for ages 8 and up.
