FERNDALE- Eighteen youth and parents attended the first Parent Night hosted by Trans Youth Group at Affirmations. On Feb. 23 young people and their parents participated in a discussion, a screening of the documentary, TransGeneration and a craft. At the session’s close, a number of parents voiced their support for a repeat of the event. “Parent Night was designed to provide a venue for parents and trans youth to network and form connections,” Lance Hicks, facilitator of Trans Youth Group said. “Affirmations provides a space for trans youth to make friends with peers who have similar experiences; but parents don’t have anywhere to go for that kind of support. Parent Night is intended to fill that gap.” Affirmations Youth Program staff expect that the event will be recurring.
