Dear BTL,
I saw "A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story" this weekend. I sobbed like it was happening to one of my own. I had never really known much about transgender issues until the show. I am sure there is more to learn – but the bottom line is NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE A LIFE. We don't all like what others do or what others are, but that is not a reason to explode and take a life. It doesn't matter how angry those boys were, or how fooled they were by Gwen, or whether they had sex with what they thought was a girl – there was no right to torture and kill. No law can ever make that okay. Maybe people should think a bit more before jumping in the sack with others. Get to know one another. Sex is taken too lightly at first. Nothing gave those boys the right to take Gwen's young life. My heart goes out to the family of Gwen. She deserved to live!
