Health Awareness Week to raise LGBT issues

The LGBT community needs to get better at taking care of itself. At least that is part of the message that the National Coalition for LGBT Health is trying to get across in their third annual LGBT Health Awareness Week March 14-20.
Postcards, posters and most importantly a website at www.lgbthealth.net offers lots of tips for getting healthier, and for community groups to establish programming that will benefit better health and well being. The site offers information to facilitate support groups on topics such as Cancer, Domestic Violence, Smoking, Mental Health, Genital Warts and HPV, Nutrition and Weight, Sexual Health, Access to Quality Healthcare, Hepatitis A, B, and C, MTF Trans Health, and FTM Trans Health.
A major push this year is to help educate medical and health care professionals in the area of "cultural competency" with regard to LGBT health. Materials and discussion documents are available on the website to help move the conversation that LGBT patients have with their healthcare providers.
