UNICEF: The United Nations' program to support and protect children worldwide. To make a donation outright or through the purchase of UNICEF-related items, visit www.unicef.org/support.
Habitat for Humanity: To give a holiday gift of support to Habitat in the name of a family member or friend, visit www.habitat.org/donation/gfth.
Michigan Humane Society: To purchase a gift from the Society's online store and benefit their work on behalf of animals, visit www.shop-michiganhumane.org. Items can also be purchased by phone by calling 866-MHUMANE.
Alternatives for Girls: Provides support services for girls in the Detroit area, including "a Detroit-based collaborative effort to create more inclusive schools and communities for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning youth. Capuchin Soup Kitchen: A few of the "Good Guys" within the Catholic Church, the Capuchin kitchen serves Detroit people in need every day. Mail donations to The Capuchin Soup Kitchen, 1820 Mt. Elliott Street, Detroit, MI 48207. If you need additional information or wish to donate non-monetary items such as buildings or property, call the Director of Development at 313-579-2100, ext. 185.
Causing a Scene at Q with Affirmations: People who like to have a good time while helping a good cause can visit Q in Ferndale during the month of November. Causing A Scene, a local performance art/dance troupe is kicking off the holiday season by teaming up with Affirmations and sponsoring a canned food drive at the popular bar. On Fridays, the production company hosts a party called Voyeur which features top notch performers, dancers and drag queens. Guests will get in for free if they bring a few canned goods, which will be distributed by Affirmations to various homeless shelters.
