Kurzawa exhibit to open at Affirmations

FERNDALE – When Affirmations unexpectedly pulled a gallery exhibit from its walls two weeks ago, it sparked a conversation amongst community members about what should be hung on the entrance walls of a nearly-public community center in Ferndale. Questions such as "What constitutes adult content?" and "What are the differences between nudity and sexual expression?" quickly arose.
As the conversation continued, Affirmations announced its decision to re-hang the exhibit for the purpose of encouraging a broader community dialogue on both censorship and perspectives on when parental guidance should be involved. Kristin Kurzawa's photography exhibit, "Femmes: Front and Center," will be on display beginning this week and up through June 12.
This is the first time this issue has come up for the gallery at Affirmations' new location. "We absolutely love our new building, but it does provide for some challenges," says Chief Administrative Officer Kathleen LaTosch.
"Our art gallery, which used to be tucked into an often locked second floor room, is now front and center and very visible for everyone who walks into the building. While this has been a terrific asset, it also brings up questions about what's appropriate content for the hundreds of young people we serve every month."
Affirmations' art gallery has developed quite a following over the last two years, featuring the work of artists such as Charlie T, Don Calloway and Judd Coveyou. This is the first time since moving to its new location that gallery decisions stirred the community in controversy. "Affirmations is an evolving organization and this controversy is no different," said Director of Communications and Development Michael Coleman. "What was inappropriate 20 years ago may be very different today. Affirmations is pleased to be part of this evolving conversation."
With the re-hang of the show, Affirmations plans to have parental notification signs at entrances. Visitors are encouraged to leave feedback in the comments box in the gallery.
