Lesbian comic 'survives' comedy competition

DEARBORN – On Friday, Aug. 5, Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center Executive Director Leslie Thompson was a true survivor.
A comedy survivor, that is. Thompson survived to take second place at the second Michigan Comedy Survivor Competition, a charity event to raise money for spinal cord research.
Thompson's award was for one of three categories in the event; emcee/open mic, openers and closers. The Affirmations executive director competed as an opener.
Though she took second place, Thompson accomplished a few important "firsts" at the event.
"One of the things that I was really excited about was that I was the first woman to make it into the finals, and the first openly gay person to make it into the finals at all," she said. "Most of the audience and the judges were straight, and it was really cool that they didn't have an issue with that."
