Ferndale – Community leaders and organizations in Southeast Michigan's gay and lesbian community will convene on Feb. 24, for a day long summit on meth use and its prevention.
"As a young gay man, meth very nearly ruined my life," said Eddie, a member of the MAPP support group for meth recovery and a speaker at the summit. "I want to warn others that there is nothing pretty about meth."
Held at the Community Pride Building and organized by Midwest AIDS Prevention Project, the conference's keynote speaker was Jim Pickett of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago and a key designer of that city's response to the methamphetamine crisis in their community.
"While meth is here now in our Metro Detroit community, it has not reached crisis proportions yet," said Craig Covey, MAPP CEO. "We'd like to keep it that way."
The summit sponsors include Michigan Department of Community Health's Office of Drug Control Policy, along with the Arcus Foundation and Abbott Laboratories. Participating LGBT organizations include Affirmations, Triangle Foundation, Al Gamaya, La Comunidad, and Asians and Friends.
