LANSING – Of all the races in Michigan's state capitol, the race for mayor is the one being most closely watched by LGBT activists and allies. According to Chris Swope, treasurer for Lansing Association for Human Rights (LAHR) PAC, mayoral contender Virg Bernero, currently a State Senator, is positive on LGBT issues while incumbent Tony Benavides is not. Benavides was on Lansing City Council for 22 years and twice voted against civil rights ordinances that would have included sexual orientation in the city's bias statutes.
Lansing's school board race includes several candidates who are friendly to LGBT issues, including a member of the community. Melissa Sue Robinson is a transgender activist seeking a seat on Lansing's school board. Swope endorsed both Robinson and school board candidate Melanie Rogers, who is also an ally to the LGBT community.
