Little Britain USA

Chris Azzopardi

"Too much!" is what my grandma's reaction would be to racy, almost-equal-opportunity-offender "Little Britain USA." And perhaps watching two willy-exposed dudes discuss their straight sexual escapades in a men's locker room (and then re-enacting them) is, perhaps, a bit did-that-just-happen?,But to those welcome to this brand of crude Lisa Lampanelli-like humor, you can't deny the hilarity of duo Matt Lucas and David Walliams.
The British export's American debut at 10:30 p.m. Sept. 28 on HBO, part of a six-part series, is bound to piss non-Borat fans off, especially with its jabs at our gun control (or lack thereof), divorce rates and obese civilians ("There are more fat people in America then there are people"). But Lucas, who is gay, and his straight partner-in-comedy make sure to offend almost everybody – especially minorities, like gays, Mexicans, breast-feeders, the handicapped and grandmas. Even Rosie O' Donnell.
The comedian makes a cameo in one of the more laugh-to-tears skits, playing herself on support group FatFighters, which is led by insensitive Marjorie Dawes. Poking fun at O'Donnell's career, size and lesbianism – "Are you fat because you're a lesbian? Or are you a lesbian because you're fat?" asks Marjorie – the laughs flood when the host calls on group members to ask Rosie questions that don't involve the star's sexuality. "Let's just stick to why she's so fat," she insists.
The gun bit – a deputy sheriff gets off when discussing the size and power of firearms – is more cringe-worthy than funny once you figure out what's going on in the guy's pants. Skits involving a self-centered man bragging to young kids about his trip to the moon, and a woman who talks to her dog – and, in a different tone, pretends its talking back – are like listening to a friend tell a joke, and then totally forgetting the punchline (though the latter one makes for a solid – and accurate, if exaggerated – social commentary on people and their pets). The show is hardly a complete wipe-out – but against FatFighters' Marjorie and a hilarious unhelpful hospital receptionist, these sketches rely purely on sardonic wit, and in turn end up being as funny as Sarah Palin actually getting into office.
