Step Inside The Box, a fundraiser for Steppin’ Out, will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 on the third floor of ZMC Pharmacy in Royal Oak.
The event, which preceeds the non-profit’s annual AIDS Walk Detroit event on Sept. 20, will feature decorated shoeboxes from local and national dignitaries filled with artwork, goodies and other surprises.
One of the boxes was designed by local artist Charles Alexander, who has donated his colorful, whimsical art pieces to make LGBT and HIV/AIDS fundraisers over the years for auction. His pieces have raised $65,000 to date for both causes combined.
Alexander’s work has been featured in the Detroit Free Press and New, Ann Arbor News, Metro Times and Between The Lines. He has exhibited at the Pittmann-Puckett Gallery in Affirmations, the Scarab Club, the Detroit Institute of Arts and is also the curator of the Affirmations gallery and a weekly columnist for Between The Lines.
