California: The state Senate approved legislation Sept. 1 that would legalize equal marriage rights, a vote that makes the chamber the first legislative body in the country to approve an equal marriage bill. The vote sets the stage for a showdown in the state Assembly, which narrowly rejected an equal marriage bill in June.

Florida: The state Supreme Court received petitions Sept. 1 asking the justices to review a citizen initiative that would amend the Florida Constitution to ban equal marriage rights. The Attorney General asked for the mandatory reviews designed to make sure such proposals are constitutional before they are sent to the voters.
