The Michigan AIDS Coalition has 30 pound boxes of food that it will be distributing to unemployed or low-income clients during the holiday season from its office in Ferndale beginning early December. The program is the first of its kind for the agency and was created in recognition of the extraordinary economic hardships facing many people in the tri-county area this year.
MAC hopes to assist up to 300 clients and families between now and the New Year who have suffered unemployment in the past two years.
Persons requesting assistance through MAC simply need to provide the following:
– Identification
– One document as evidence of unemployment
– Proof of low income
– A household bill in their name
"Food distribution is a new service for the Michigan AIDS Coalition," said Helen Hicks, CEO of MAC. "But at least during this time of historic rates of unemployment and economic pain, we will be helping our clients and the community over the holiday season."
Persons wishing to access food boxes may come to the MAC Ferndale offices at 429 Livernois in Ferndale between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Dec. 7 or Dec. 8 and must provide the documentation listed above. The food boxes will be provided along with HIV/AIDS information.
Free anonymous HIV testing will also be available on a walk-in basis on those days.
"We are happy to be able to provide this food courtesy of the Gleaner's Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, our partner in this collaboration," said Royale Theus, MAC program director.
MAC is a statewide HIV/AIDS prevention education and advocacy non-profit.
