Michigan's Makeover

Chris Azzopardi

Chris Carter and John Simpson can't really guarantee they'll convince the Michigan Court of Appeals to give same-sex couple benefits. But when they come to Saugatuck to shoot the upcoming season of their reality show, some lonesome heart will find its match – and they'll pretend to be the Ghostbusters.
"We're hopefully gonna turn around Michigan," Simpson says. "I think that after our three weeks, Michigan is gonna be a much better – and gayer – place."
For season three of "Chris and John to the Rescue!", the campy, Canadian-born reality show, which made its U.S. debut last year on here! TV, is filming the six episodes tentatively set to air in January at Campit Gay & Lesbian Outdoor Resort, and at surrounding areas, from July 31 to Aug. 19.
From twinks to bears, the best-friends duo is seeking subjects – "Are you single? Do you have a haunted house?"
"If anyone thinks their house is haunted, they should contact us, 'cause we're experts obviously in the field of exorcism," Simpson laughs.
Do you have an ex willing to be on the show, too? Maybe you wanna date Chris Carter? How about a rescue mission of your own? Or are you ready for "marriage"?
"We want someone who wants a very fun sort of outrageous-themed wedding," Simpson says. "Think like circus or Mardi Gras or rodeo or any of those kind of fun things – or medieval."
The guys will also rescue the Dunes Resort, a popular gay destination in that area – "We're working for a day at the Dunes, cleaning rooms and putting on a Cabaret show."
Before choosing Saugatuck for season three, Simpson and Carter planned on shooting at six different North American campgrounds – but that was before they realized how few gay and lesbian ones existed.
"A lot of them are gay men only, which is problematic for us, because we can't have a gay-men-only show," Simpson says. "So, we had to go somewhere that was more inclusive … and then we found Campit resort, and they were just so friendly and welcoming."
And the area, like season two's Provincetown, is just kick-butt, he says.
"It's sort of a gay and lesbian tourist destination – and it's gorgeous as well, with their beaches and such. It sort of started to make more sense to shoot the season there. … We're just really excited to be at Campit Resort for the whole time 'cause, I mean, I've been there once now and it's just gonna be a really, really fun place to shoot at. It's gonna be a fun season."
