Motown Invitational Classic to welcome LGBT bowlers

The Motown Invitational Classic, Michigan's largest LGBT bowling tournament, is back. Now in its 23rd year, MIC will host three days of competitive events from Oct. 10-12. The event will be held at Clover Lanes Bowl in Livonia, where more than 200 bowlers from across the U.S. and Canada are expected to compete.
Each year, the event is held with a theme to encourage costume-wearing fun. This year's theme will be "Bowling Through the Decades."
"MIC committee members will put on their poodle skirts and slide into their parachute pants to add flare to this year's festive theme," Said MIC Co-Director Michael Odom. "Each year, our committee works very hard to ensure tournament bowlers have a wonderful and memorable experience in the Motor City. Our 2008 theme will certainly help us accomplish this goal."
The three-day event will include opportunities for serious and casual bowlers of all skill levels.
The weekend of bowling events will kick off with a 9-Pin No Tap singles tournament on Friday night. A 9-Pin No Tap scoring allows bowlers who hit nine pins on their first bowl to have a strike counted. Bowlers of any skill level are welcome and do not have to be registered in the MIC tournament to compete. The cost is $15 per bowler and registration opens at 7 p.m. for the event, which begins at 9:30 p.m.
On Saturday, the fun continues with the MIC singles event. Beginning at 11 a.m., the three-hour competition will be immediately followed by the MIC doubles event.
On Sunday, bowlers will return to Clover Lanes at 11 a.m. to finish the MIC tournament in the team event.
Top rankings will be determined for each individual category, as well as an all-around category with prizes and awards. All awards will be distributed at the banquet on Sunday evening. The banquet and awards ceremoney will be held in the ballrooms of the Sheraton Detroit Novi. A cocktail reception will be held at 6 p.m., followed by dinner.
There will also be a 50/50 raffle held, the proceeds of which will benefit local organizations. "Although the MIC tournament is designed as an opportunity for friendly competition, we always make time to support our local non-profit organizations," explained MIC Co-Director Bruce Van Dike. "The 2008 beneficiaries of our 50/50 charity raffles are Steppin' Out, Affirmations and the Midwest AIDS Prevention Project. We R Family will be the benefiting charity during our awards banquet."
Following the awards banquet, bowlers are invited to gather at Gigi's bar in Detroit for the official MIC tournament closing party. Patrons will enjoy a MIC finale show, dancing, raffles and prizes.
