DETROIT –
The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan announced grants totaling $55,000 from The Hope Fund to assist agencies and organizations that support the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and communities. Grants were awarded this month to the following:
Affirmations Community Center in Ferndale will receive $15,000 for support to expand programs and services during after-school hours for gay and non-gay youths. With its new 16,000 square-foot facility the Center hopes to involve more young people in programs including computer training, cultural and recreational activities, and opportunities for community engagement.
American Civil Liberties Union in Detroit will receive $15,000 for support to develop a fundraising plan to sustain its LGBT project, which assists individuals and families with legal and civil rights issues. The grant will enable ACLU to hire a development consultant to work with the ACLU staff. The agency's goal is to secure at least half of its budget from non-grant resources, considered more reliable for longterm funding support.
The Triangle Foundation, Detroit, will receive $25,000 for support to create an online community and collection of resources for LGBT youths. The Triangle Foundation has seen requests for inforamtion grow resulting in hundreds of calls per month. The grant will enable the foundation to create a web site that will contain information, including details of community events, resources, news, and health matters. The site is due to be launched in October 2007.
Since its inception in 1994, over $1 million in grants have been made through the Foundation's HOPE Fund which exists to strengthen and empower organizations that serve the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.
