WYANDOTTE – PFLAG-Downriver marched this year in the Wyandotte Independence Day parade, which took place in downtown Wyandotte on Saturday, July 3. The PFLAG contingency consisted of about 15 PFLAG members, one canine friend, two cars and a float featuring a rainbow balloon arch. A color guard led the way, carrying both the American and rainbow Pride flags, as well as a host of signs and banners.
PFLAG-Downriver also had volunteers wondering through the crowds to look for petitioners gathering signatures for the proposed amendment to the Michigan constitution banning marriage equality for gays and lesbians. One PFLAG volunteer went so far as to leave the parade mid-route to shadow a petitioner, and ended up escorting her back to the start of the parade, where the discouraged petitioner boarded the trolley sponsored by Michigan Right to Life.
Despite the occasional jeer, the PFLAG contingency received mostly cheers from the enthusiastic crowd. This is the fourth year PFLAG-Downriver has participated in the parade.
