Police Search for Suspect Who Shot Houston Trans Woman

Houston, TX police are searching for a suspect after a black, trans woman was shot five times on Thursday, Jan. 24 in the parking lot of a Chevron station shortly after 11 a.m. by a man who chased her down, according to black, trans activist Monica Roberts, the founding editor of Transgriot, who shared the news on her blog.
The shooting was caught on the store's surveillance camera. The 24-year old, identified by friends and local activists as Pinky, was taken to a nearby hospital; her condition remains unknown.
Roberts calls out the Houston Chronicle, which reported the original story, and also the police for misgendering the victim and refusing to use her name.
In response, the Transgender Education Network of Texas posted a statement on Facebook.
"The initial report listed her as a woman, but then later in the same report went on to state her gender marker identified her as male. Unfortunately, this is a story that plays out far too often in our community. Due to the complicated process and financial barriers that our community face when changing our identification to match who we truly are many of us do not have the means or access to be able to have a state issued license or ID that identifies us correctly as who we are."
This incident has occurred not long after Dana Martin, a trans woman living in Montgomery, AL, was fatally shot on Sunday, Jan. 6.
The suspect, described as a black male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, was wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt. It was reported by police that he got into a nearby light-colored SUV, possibly a Honda. The shooter is still at large.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
