Resource center makes elder care resource guide

By Tara Cavanaugh

The Jewish Gay Network of Michigan is making an elder care resource guide, in hopes of directing older gay adults to businesses and service providers who are sensitive to the needs of older LGBT adults.
Judy Lewis, executive director of the network, said the Jewish Women's Foundation gave the network a grant for many projects geared toward helping older adults. One of those projects is the resource guide. Lewis said the network is partnering with many organizations around the state, such as Affirmations, the ACLU of Michigan, Equality Michigan and many more, to reach out to businesses who would like to be included in the guide.
"With 13 percent of the population now 65 and older, we need to provide information for people so they prepare for older adulthood," Lewis said. "We're hearing horrible stories about people who are not prepared," Lewis said, whether that be financially, legally or medically.
If your business would like to take part, contact Lewis by March 4 via e-mail at [email protected].
A hard copy of the resource guide will be unveiled at Affirmations Community Center in Ferndale at the April 6 Older Adult Summit and also at the first Jewish Gay Network program at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield on April 10.
Although the deadline to be included in the hard copy is fast approaching, Lewis said that all organizations involved in creating the resource guide will also include the business information on their websites.
