Soulfest Explosion to hit Detroit

By Imani Williams

DETROIT– "Soulfest Explosion: A Cultural Experience" will be held July 31 from 9 p.m. – 2 a.m. at the Liberal Arts Gallery in Detroit.
Motown's own Kalimah Johnson is back with her annual event and doing it bigger than ever. Johnson says of her affair, "I've enjoyed providing this venue for the past three years; it's something from my heart that I share with the entire community."
This year's entertainment will feature R&B soul singer Thornetta Davis, known for her work in the Michigan Lottery commercials and ads for the Detroit Pistons.
The night will be hosted by comedian and WJLB air personality CoCo, and other performers include 'Detroit Slam Poets' Cassie, Versiz, Dee and Rhapsody. Guests wanting to step to the microphone to share their work are invited to sign up for open mic.
This event will also be the official CD release party for Kalimah Johnson's long awaited work, 'Datswhatimadu'. CD's will be available for $10.
Local Entrepreneurs, Flo, Tulani Rose, and Peace and Love Creations will have various afrocentric wares available for purchase. In addition, art will be exhibited by the Liberal Arts Gallery.
Cuisine will be prepared by Dee and Ardine's Specialty Catering. Attendees are invited to enjoy complimentary wine and mimosas.
Following Thornetta's second set guests can hit the dance floor and groove to the hypnotic beats of Sound Circle Collective.
Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. There will be limited tickets at the door; advanced purchase is recommended. Tickets are available at a Woman's Prerogative Bookstore or by calling 313-606-2342.
Soulfest Explosion is an official Detroit Black Gay Pride event and is open to anyone who identifies as LGBTQI and those who support the community.
