Stagecrafters Youth Theatre presents 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'

ROYAL OAK
C.S. Lewis' book "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" has been listed by Time Magazine as one of the top 100 novels of all time and voted the best children's book of all time by literary charity The Book Trust. Staying true to the storyline, Stagecrafters Youth Theatre brings the magic and adventure of the classic tale to life on stage Dec. 11-14 at the Baldwin Theatre.
While the rain pounds the window panes, four children entertain themselves with a game of hide-and-seek in the old dark mansion where they are staying. The youngest child, Lucy (Regan Castle of Pleasant Ridge) decides that an old wardrobe would be the perfect hiding place. As she steps inside, she finds that the wardrobe has transported her into a snowy, mysterious world where animals talk and mythological creatures roam.
She meets Mr. Tumnus, a faun (Sam Urich of Royal Oak), who tells her about how Narnia used to be before the ruthless White Witch (Shelby Maurice of Royal Oak) began her reign. Lucy returns to the old mansion and tells of her adventure to the disbelief of her older siblings, Peter (Joe Cavanaugh of Madison Heights), Susan (Robin Collins of Berkley) and Edmund (Mike Vultaggio of Centerline).
When they all climb through the wardrobe, they are whisked into the fantasy winter wonderland of Narnia where they encounter a series of adventures as they search for the majestic lion, Aslan (Zachary Hampel of Troy). The White Witch will not give up her reign easily in the land "where it's always winter but never Christmas." She and her army seek to destroy the children, Aslan and his followers so that she may keep a permanent winter grip on Narnia.
Performed by Stagecrafters Youth Theatre (SYT) members, ages 8-18, this version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, dramatized by Joseph Robinette, is suitable for all ages, boasting realistic fight scenes, narrow escapes, intermittent humor, creative costuming and an enchanting set.
Co-directed by David Zublick (of Royal Oak) and Noelle Ochoa (of Clawson), the duo decided to undertake the directorial hat because the script stayed so close to the original storyline. "Audiences will find that the sense of adventure and danger, as well as the poignant and humorous moments, makes for some great entertainment," said Zublick in a statement.
Tickets are $6 for youth and $9 for adults. Call 248-541-6430 for tickets. To avoid the disappointment of a sold-out show, make reservations early. This show is recommended for ages 5 and older. For more information, including show times, visit http://www.stagecrafters.org.
