In the 1970s and 1980s, newly politicized gay men and lesbians took up activist work on behalf of their gay "brothers" and "sisters" behind bars. At the same time, prisoners, some of whom identified as gay, began organizing on their own behalf to claim and defend their rights to sexual protection and sexual expression.
"'Be a Gay We Can be Proud of' – Gay Politics and Prison Sexual Culture, 1970-85" explores the understandings, misunderstandings, and often uneasy alliances forged between queer prison insiders and outsiders.
