The curtain rises on a brand new season

Theater is busting out all over the place this week, as the 2007/08 season officially gets underway not with a trickle of new shows, but with a deluge.
The curtain will rise over the next few days on an astounding 12 shows – and two new theater companies – quickly followed by eight more next week and 10 the following. And those are only the ones we KNOW about at this point. More are sure to come as local publicists swing into action after the Labor Day break.
The community theater community kicks off the season this weekend with two popular musicals, "The Music Man" staged by the Ann Arbor Civic Theatre and "Thoroughly Modern Millie" at Stagecrafters, while the Novi Theatres' Senior Variety Series takes a walk down memory lane with "Hit Parade."
School started early for the theater department at Oakland University, which is presenting "Found a Peanut," a nostalgic look back at summer vacations and the excitement and drama kids faced each day on a typical American playground. Not to be outdone, Eastern Michigan University is hitting a home run by bringing back its musical tribute to Detroit Tigers' baseball, "Diamonds in the D."
Another revival that's sure to please theatergoers is "The Rocky Horror Show," courtesy of Meadow Brook Theatre and the Meadow Brook Music Festival.
Also getting an early start to the season are the BoarsHead Theater ("Mrs. Warren's Profession"), the Ledges Playhouse ("Scenes from an American Life"), Performance Network Theatre ("The Clean House") and Broadway Onstage ("Something to Hide").
But it's the premiere of two new professional theaters this week that might create the most buzz in metro Detroit.
Mah-Dey Theatre, founded by Maria Serratos to develop and produce Hispanic plays and talent, teams with Matrix Theatre Company to present "Real Women Have Curves." And the much talked about and eagerly anticipated Tipping Point Theatre takes up residence in downtown Northville with "Don't Dress for Dinner."
Where will Curtain Calls be? Find out right here next week. Till then, see ya in the theater!
