ANN AROBR- The UofM Office of LGBT Affairs invites the public to join them in observance of Transgender Awareness Week. Observed on many college campuses across the country, Transgender Awareness Week is a week of celebration, awareness, and visibility for the transgender community.
The activities kick off this Thursday with a showing of TransAmerica, and
events culminate on Sunday, Nov. 18, with the annual Transgender Day
of Remembrance ceremony, which honors those who have been killed due to
anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.

Thurs, Nov 8: TransAmerica
5:30pm, East Room, Pierpont Commons
Come watch Bree (Felicity Hu man) get the shock of her life when a week before her nal sex change surgery she discovers a son she didn't know she had. After bailing him out of jail the two set out on a cross-country journey riddled with road bumps. Hu man won numerous awards (and an Oscar nomination) for her role as a man longing to be a woman. Elizabeth Pena, Burt Young, Kevin Zegers and Graham Greene co-star. Discussion to follow.

Mon, Nov 12: What's in a Name?
5:30pm, MSA Chambers, 3909 Michigan Union
The O ce of LGBT A airs is engaging in a process that will result in the change of its name. Take this opportunity to hear why they decided this was important and also to provide feedback and suggestions for the future.

Tues, Nov 13: Gender Bending Day
all day, with discussion to follow – 6 p.m., 3816 School of Social Work.
Gender bender is an informal term used to refer to a person who actively transgresses, or "bends," expected gender roles. Gender bending is a form of social activism in response to assumptions or over-generalizations about gender. The community is invited to participate in this day of gender challenge and celebration by wearing clothes that express resistance to gender rules! Play with gender, dress in drag, do what you always wanted, but on this day be di erent and help develop awareness about gender and transgender oppression. After a day of gender bending, join us in the School of Social Work for a discussion and debrief.

Wed, Nov 14: "It's Who You Are"
7 p.m. MSA Chambers, 3909 Michigan Union
What's all this talk about gender identity and gender expression? Do you want to talk about gender and how it operates in our society, but lack the language to express yourself and/or feel uncomfortable doing so? Do you wonder what transgender means? Watch this brief educational video put together by students and sta at The University of Michigan, and then dialogue about gender.

Thurs, Nov 15: TRANSgeneration
5 p.m. -8 p.m., East Room Pierpont Commons.
Come and watch clips from Transgneration – an absorbing gender-bending documentary series that captures a year in the life of four college students who've made the commitment to transition from their birth sex despite the diffi cult consequences. Follow along as Lucas writes a letter explaining the decision to become a man, Raci seeks illegal hormones on the black market, Gabbie celebrates his surgery with a preop dinner party and T.J. plans a trip to Cyprus, Greece, to visit her parents.

Sun, Nov 18: Transgender Day of Remembrance Ceremony
6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Rackham East and West Conference Rooms, 4th Floor
Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in 1998 kicked o the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Since then, the event has grown to encompass memorials in dozens of cities across the world. We will take time to both remember our past and celebrate our future.

Throughout the week, The LGBT Commission of Michigan Student Assembly will be chalking/ yering campus with defi nitions and provocative pieces to raise awareness about Gender Identity and Gender Expression.
