Friends For The Dearborn Animal Shelter
Valentine's is the perfect time to meet your best friend for life; and there is no better best friend than a four-legged, furry one!
The Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter is hosting a special Valentine's Meet Your Match adoption event at its training center, located next to Pet Supplies Plus at 2621 S. Telegraph Rd. in Dearborn. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
"Meet Your Match is sort of like eHarmony," explains Elaine Greene, executive director for the Friends. "It's a way for us to ensure that an animal is being placed in the most suitable home." The adoption program was developed by animal behaviorist Emily Weiss, Ph.D. Following an initial evaluation, a dog is tested in five areas: greeting; being left alone; level of play energy; food motivation; and, overall behavior.
Based on results, a dog is placed into one of 3 color-coded groups: purple indicates a low-maintenance, relaxed "couch potato"; orange indicates a playful, curious dog who can be a "busy bee"; and, green indicates a free-spirited, high-energy dog who requires a great deal of exercise. After prospective parents fill out a one-page, personality and lifestyle survey, they, too, are scored. Adopters are then given a "guest pass" indicating their "color" and are encouraged to look for their perfect match among the dogs available for adoption.
The Meet Your Match program is already in place at the Dearborn Animal Shelter. So even if you are not able to attend the adoption event, please visit the shelter to meet your potential match among the many dogs looking for their best friend. The Dearborn Animal Shelter is located at 2661 Greenfield Rd. in Dearborn. Hours are: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday; and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
