Lansing Queer Almanac

For the past five months, I have been coordinating with Scott Harris of Everybody Reads to convene a gathering focused on documenting and preserving the history of LGBTQ+ people in Lansing and the greater Mid-Michigan area. Through this work, I have begun learning powerful local stories, including the Lansing Area AIDS Network’s buddy program in the 1980s, which faced criticism simply for acknowledging an urgent public-health concern affecting Americans. I have also connected with author Michael Lee, whose work explores a reporter who covered LGBTQ+ issues during the era chronicled in And the Band Played On. In addition, I have crossed paths with women-centered institutions and publications such as Lesbian Connection and Sistrum. This history is bringing people together, and I am grateful to connect with community members who have stories, memories, and materials to share.
