Located just north of the downtown sports and entertainment district and bisected by Woodward Avenue, Midtown is the cultural, artistic and intellectual center of greater Detroit. The area is anchored by some of the city’s largest institutions including Wayne State University, The Detroit Medical Center, The Detroit Institute of Arts, The Detroit Historical Museum, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Museum of Contemporary Art and just to the west the Henry Ford Medical Center – to name only a few.
Dozens of restaurants, theaters, coffee shops, bars, hotels and inns, stores and event spaces have opened up in just the last few years. Shinola Detroit opened its flagship store on Canfield Street, and other specialty national retailers have popped up such as John Varvatos and Carhartt.
But what makes Midtown special are the local merchants who committed early to Midtown and that have flourished as the area has boomed. LGBTQ-founded businesses like Hugh on Cass Street, The Peacock Room and Frida on Kirby and Avalon International Breads on Willis St., and galleries like the Detroit Artist Gallery, Artloft and the Detroit Gallery of Contemporary Crafts fuel the area’s trendy, youthful energy. Restaurants such as La Feria, Cuisine, Cass Café, Seva, Union Street, The Majestic, Traffic Jam & Snug, Wasabi, Shangri-la and The Whitney all have been regular spots for LGBTQ diners for decades.
Detroit is also home to more live professional theater seats than any other American city except New York. The Fisher Theater and Olympia Entertainment both bring in Broadway touring groups. The Detroit Repertory Theater, WSU’s Hilberry and Bonstelle Theaters, The Fox, Planet Ant and the Detroit Film Theater are only a few of the exceptional entertainment venues either in or within easy driving distance of Midtown. Check out www.EncoreMichigan.com for complete listings and reviews of live professional theater in and around the city.
See a show, have a meal, shop, enjoy a museum, relax in a comfortable room at the Inn of Ferry Street. Midtown is a wonderfully exciting area to explore and enjoy!

Located in downtown Detroit, across from GM World Headquarters, Briggs Sports Bar is a popular after-work watering-hole. This attractive club draws an energetic crowd to its Trophy Room dance club with kickass djs. The bar features 22 craft beers and two alcohol infusions on tap, and the full kitchen offers a menu that is decidedly meat-oriented BBQ, burgers and housebraised corned beef. The SkyBox rooftop is perfect for enjoying a cocktail while taking in an unrivaled view of downtown.
One of Detroit's oldest and most popular night spots, Club Gold Coast features male strippers and is open 7 nights a week. Located near the Palmer Park area of Detroit, once the epicenter of Detroit's gay scene. The area is coming back after decades of decline, and Club Gold Coast has thrived through it all, featuring male strippers, dancing and an extensive bar every night.
Hayloft, Sports & Video Bar is a male club offering Karaoke, pool, darts, six LCD screens and internet juke box. Open since 1980, The Hayloft is owned by Ron Harrington who also owns the gay bar, Side Traxx in Traverse City. Happy Hour starts a 2 p.m. everyday. Menjo's Complex (or just Menjo's for short) has been a gathering place for the gay community of Metro Detroit for decades. It's also a bit of a Madonna mecca since she used to be a regular when the Material Girl was also a local Michigan girl. The mostly male 20-to-30 something crowd comes for the dancing and entertainment. The Complex includes the Menjos Bar, the Eagle Leather bar and the Olympus Theater. Karaoke, go-go dancers and strippers, trans events, concerts and performers - check out the website and Facebook for an events calendar. Open 7 Days a week. There's always something going on at Menjo's.
In the heart of Midtown, Woodward Bar and Grill is the oldest gay bar in Detroit dating back to 1960. Its storied history is reflected in the pictures on the walls and in conversations youll hear from loyal patrons. The Woodward is open for lunch and dinner with simple but excellent fare, especially their burgers. During the day it serves the many business people in the area, turning mostly LGBTQ after 5 p.m. Its popular with the Black LGBTQ community and is a welcoming environment for men, women, trans.
But dont be confused by the name. Its not about Queens as in gay men. Queens is named after the NYC borough the owners have another Detroit bar named Bronx. Although not specifically an LGBTQ bar, Queens Bar has an unpretentious vibe and clearly welcomes LGBTQ patrons with a super-friendly staff that is very open. It has large windows wrapping around the exterior that let in plenty of light. A clean lined bar design mimics the curved corner of the building, and theres a cool streetside patio. They have a kitchen and offer a grill menu.
