Obituary: Former Affirmations board member Wyrick dies

OAK PARK – Phyllis Wyrick, 63, died Oct. 13 after a long fight with Alzheimer's disease.
Wyrick was a highly respected health administrator who had served as executive director of YWCAs in Houston, St. Louis and Flint. She also served as the executive director of the Northern Oakland Girl Scout Council in the 1980s.
"She was one of the most brilliant women I had ever met," said long time friend Barbara Simons of Detroit. The two had met in the 1960s when they worked together on the Model Cities Program in Highland Park. "She was a tremendous teacher and mentor to me."
Wyrick was born in Dunkirk, Indiana and graduated from the University of Indiana. She later earned a master's degree in health administration from Wayne State University.
Wyrick served on the board of directors of Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center in Ferndale from 1994 to 1995.
