Lauper returns to Games

Chris Azzopardi

CHICAGO – Cyndi Lauper hardly needs an introduction. As a renowned figure in the gay community, with an illustrious number of hit tunes and a recent part in the Broadway play "Threepenny Opera," Lauper is known to queers far and wide as a singer, actress, activist and mother. It's only fitting she'll close the Gay Games in Chicago on July 23.

Between The Lines: Have you attended a Gay Games event before?
Cyndi Lauper: Yes, I actually performed for the Gay Games back in '94. I had a blast. Can't wait to do it again.
BTL: How many sports do you watch? Which sports did you play as a child?
CL: Hmm… I was big on synchronized swimming. You can thank Esther Williams for that.
BTL: Why are you most excited to be part of this event?
CL: Professional sports and sports in general are unfortunately still one of the areas where homophobia still thrives. The games demonstrate to the world that serious athletes and people who love sports come in various shapes, sizes, colors, nationalities and sexual orientations. The games assist in putting an end to those narrow stereotypes. The games also allow athletes from across the globe to come together and compete with and against each other and celebrate with each other.
BTL: Will you be doing a full set list for your performance during the closing ceremonies?
CL: It won't be a full set. It will be a select few songs.
BTL: How will you compile which songs make it on the set list for the Gay Games?
CL: I am actually still kicking around which ones to choose. I have had requests from the organizers of the event and people involved with the games, and I'm still narrowing it down.
BTL: Are there touring plans for the summer or fall? If not, what are your plans for the summer?
CL: Music and maybe more acting. I love acting. Also, to spend more time with my son.
BTL: How was it working on Broadway? Is this something you'd like to do again?
CL: Yes, I love it. It is an amazing experience. I have the pleasure to work with such wonderful people like Alan Cumming, Nellie McKay, Jim Dale. I love acting.
