DETROIT – The Midwest AIDS Prevention Project hopes to turn water into money with two upcoming cruises on Saturday, Aug. 19, and Friday, Aug. 25.
On Aug. 19, MAPP will host its annual LGBT Detroit river party cruise. This year's theme is "Pirates of the Detroit River," and attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite swashbuckler. On Aug. 25, MAPP will host the Fifth Annual Ladies Night on the Water on the "Diamond Jack."
While "Pirates" is a fundraiser for the agency as a whole, proceeds of the annual "Ladies Night" will benefit Lesbian-A-Sisters, a volunteer-driven not-for-profit project of MAPP which assists disabled and differently-abled women with household chores, errands, doctorÕs visits, and support and friendship.
A live DJ and other entertainment will be provided for the Aug. 19 cruise by Club Innuendo, this year's sponsor, while the Aug. 25 event will feature DJ Kelly Rowan along with a cash bar and raffles, dancing, and other surprises.
"While the event is an important fundraiser for MAPP in this time of severe state cutbacks, the moonlight cruise is also a fun and romantic rite of summer," said Craig Covey, MAPP CEO, of the Aug. 19 event. "If you would rather avoid the gridlock on Woodward from theÊannualÊDream Cruise, this provides a relaxing and peaceful alternative."
Tickets for both events are $28 per person and are available at Just For Us in downtown Ferndale, at the MAPP offices, or by calling MAPP at (248) 545-1435. Tickets for the Aug. 19 event are also available at Club Innuendo. Party-goers for the Aug. 19 event will leave the dock in downtown Detroit at 7:30 p.m., while the Ladies' Night is scheduled from 8-11 p.m. Call MAPP for more information, including dock location.
