KALAMAZOO – Wellspring and Blue Dahlia will present a special performance of their ever-popular live music/modern dance collaboration, "This Floating World," as a benefit for the Kalamazoo Gay/Lesbian Resource Center. The performance will be presented 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at the Dale Lake Auditorium, located on Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Texas Township campus.
Described as "a visual and audible feast," this innovative concert features the poetic and athletic choreography of Wellspring Artistic Director Cori Terry and Artistic Associate Michael Miller, set to the captivating sounds of modern music quartet Blue Dahlia. Wellspring and Blue Dahlia have performed this collaborative work on numerous occasions to rave reviews and sold-out audiences.
"This Floating World" premiered in 2002. Since its premiere, it has been performed for enthusiastic audiences of school children and adults alike. Not only is "This Floating World" a marvelous piece because it incorporates live music with dance, but because the musicians are part of the set, visible behind the dancers.
Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers is southwest Michigan's only professional modern dance company. Founded in 1981 by dancer and choreographer, Cori Terry, Wellspring presents performances featuring works choreographed by Terry, Artistic Associate Michael Miller and guest artists.
This extraordinary company of poetic and athletic dancers is committed to revealing the language of modern dance to audiences of all ages. Located in the state-of-the-art Wellspring Theater in downtown Kalamazoo's Epic Center, Wellspring offers performances, classes and outreach programs that share the art form of modern dance.
Blue Dahlia is a unique modern music quartet. Hypnotizing vocals tethered to plummeting bass lines create a perfect line of tension for delicate and driving guitar melody, all supported by a complex framework of multi-ethnic percussion. The highly crafted music invites both close listening and dancing as it combines and juxtaposes stylistic influences.
The KGLRC provides support for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and "questioning" youth and adults in the greater Kalamazoo area. The KGLRC offers support to community members and space for clubs, meetings, counseling, etc. The KGLRC also has workplace diversity training, LGBT speaker's panels for schools, organizations, churches and businesses. The KGLRC offers the public access to the over 2,000 LGBT books, videos and publications in the James B. Knox Library.
"This Floating World" will be performed Friday, Sept. 29 at the Dale Lake Auditorium at Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Texas Township Campus. All proceeds benefit the Kalamazoo Gay/Lesbian Resource Center.
