DETROIT – Antique hunters will find vintage furniture, china, built-in architectural features at an auction being held April 28 at Detroit's historic El Moore building. The building is being renovated by El Moore condominiums which are offering the items for auction as part of a fundraiser for Affirmations and Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit. Period antiques from the 1870s to 1920s will be offered and the items can be previewed online at www.GoAffirmations.org.
El Moore was constructed in 1898 by A.C. Varney & Company and is a uniquely
attractive example of Late Gothic Revival. Many of the items included in the auction come directly from El Moore house itself. Auction items include cast iron bathtubs with original claw feet, built-in sideboards
with buffets and attached mirrors, a cylinder roll desk with hutch, a rare,
embossed toilet bowl, fireplace mantles with curio shelves – most with
original mirrors, tile and grates, a custom built, Victorian cherry wood
bed, solid oak doors, upholstered cherry settee with finely carved arms,
cherry drop leaf table, limoges fine bone china-service for 18, and a
federal period bent oak rocker.
"Detroit is our home town. We were born and raised here and felt that we
wanted to give back to the community that gave so much to us. When we
couldn't use all the original fixtures in the El Moore, we decided that we
would have a charitable auction that would benefit Detroit directly," says
Gail Geer of El Moore Condominiums/The Alex Lofts on The Avenue. "We're
thrilled to support these two wonderful charities."
