Saugatuck's Red Barn wins state honors

SAUGATUCK – Saugatuck's Red Barn Theatre received top honors at the 2007 Community Theatre Association of Michigan's Play Festival held in South Haven the weekend of March 23-24. The CTAM Festival consisted of 10 entrants from across the state. The Red Barn Community Players performed "Revival At Possum Kingdom Community Church" written by South Haven playwright, Linda LaRocque. The play was directed by Lakeshore Arts Alliance Executive Director Patricia Knox Huyge who stated, "The Red Barn Community Players and the Lakeshore Arts Alliance have only been in existence for one year. We feel that this is a remarkable feat for LAA and the Red Barn in such a short time. We were so excited that our little (original) play won in competition with Shakepeare, Neil Simon and others. I am sure we will do Saugatuck proud when we perform in Schaumburg."
The Red Barn Community Theatre group placed first and won the right to represent Michigan in the Regional Competition of the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) Fest along with the Rosedale Community Theatre and its production of "No Exit" by Jean Paul Sartre.
Because there were at least 10 entrants, Michigan had the right to send two productions to the AACT Fest. The AACT competition will be held April 27 and 28 in Schaumburg, IL at the Prairie Arts Center.
The Red Barn Community Players also received the "Best Ensemble Award" from the Michigan judges. "Revival At Possum Kingdom Community Church" starred Bill Muzzillo (Saugatuck), Brian Everitt, Jack Oonk, JoLee Hanson, (Holland) and Loretta Adomeit (South Haven). The ensemble first performed "Possum Kingdom" together in the summer of 2006. "We knew then that this group had something special….they just clicked together," said Sandi Boxer, Red Barn Publicist.
"The best ensemble award means as much to us, maybe more, as the best performance award," said Bill Muzzillo who played the role of Alvo T. Haggarty.
The performers had very restricted time limits in which to set up, perform, then knock down the sets. Set designers John Huyge, Matt Daniels and Stewart Leniger provided invaluable support in meeting these limits, plus their set design also received high praise from the judges.
