Three theaters team for 'Menage A Shaw' in Lansing

LANSING – Three downtown Lansing theaters will join together April 15 to do a staged reading of George Bernard Shaw's "The Doctor's Dilemma." This wonderful play is the center of a "Menage A Shaw," an afternoon community fundraiser for BoarsHead Theater, L.C.C.'s Performing Arts Department and the Riverwalk Theatre. The reading will take place at 3 p.m. at the Riverwalk Theatre.
Look for BoarsHead talent in the cast, which includes Kristine Thatcher, as well as noted area performers Ken Beachler, Bob Gras, Lamont Clegg, Connie Curran-Osterle, Mark Zussman and L.C.C.'s Theater Department Head, Andy Callis, who will also be directing the production. In addition, the theaters are honored to welcome as guest artist, John Schneider, writer for the Lansing State Journal. And, of course, Schneider will be playing the part of The Newspaperman!
"The Doctor's Dilemma" was written in 1906 and is one of Shaw's more popular works, a witty parody of a medical doctor's inevitable choice. The dilemma laid out in this production is this: how does an urbane physician, who has just been knighted for his recent medical breakthrough, choose whom to save when he has two terminally ill patients? The doctor only has enough medicine for one patient! Does the Hippocratic Oath prevail when there is much needed money to be made? Or perhaps, it is easier to choose when influenced by morality, love and the distinction between a talented, but boring, man and a roguish playboy?
"With our current national health and insurance concerns, this is a very intriguing play to read in performance," said BoarsHead Artistic Director Kristine Thatcher. "It's also great to be back working with LCC and The Riverwalk. We've had a very successful collaboration with this season's STAGES OF THE LAW series so generously sponsored by Cooley Law School. And you know, there is a wonderful strength in numbers, especially in the arts. The idea of organizations fundraising together is becoming essential to the national arts community, at large."
Tickets are $25, with the special "Menage A Shaw" pricing of $60 for groups of three; each additional group member is $20. Student tickets are $10. All seats are reserved.
Tickets are available at Riverwalk Theatre, 228 Museum Drive, Lansing, 517-482-5700, in advance and at the door.
The Shaw reading will be followed by an informal English Tea, and all funds from ticket sales will be divided equally among each of the participating theaters. Funds will be used at BoarsHead and Riverwalk for operational and programming efforts and at LCC for theatre student scholarships.
