Halloween candidate benefit

FERNDALE – Just4Us, Between The Lines newspaper, Michigan Equality and "9" will host a Halloween fundraiser for "Out and Ally LGBT candidates" for public office on Oct 31. Local candidates throughout the state will be supported through this grassroots fundraiser beginning 8p.m. at the new 9 nightclub.
The event aims to bring attention to campaigns that will directly benefit the LGBT community.
"We are very excited to support grassroots efforts to raise awareness and funds for supportive candidates," says Derek Smiertka, executive director for Michigan Equality, adding "I like the grassroots idea of encouraging individuals to run for public office."
The Halloween fundraiser will support Ferndale City Councilman Craig Covey who is running for Mayor and Tom Zeraffa who is running for Mayor in Oak Park. There are other candidates being considered for a donation throughout the state as well.
"Ferndale has a higher percentage of LGBT individuals than most parts of the state; we feel it is important to look both inside and outside our city and support candidates for office in any race we can identify," says Kevin Rogers from Just4Us.
A 50/50 raffle, gift bags for those who wear costumes and other special treats will be given to those who attend the event. "For a small donation of $5 people can really make a difference while having a great time," says Rogers.
