Local non-profit Broadway presenter, Broadway Grand Rapids, is teaming up with ACCESS West Michigan for the upcoming Grand Rapids tour of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" to help stock Kent County food pantries for the holiday season.
Prior to each performance of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" at DeVos Performance Hall from Nov. 20-25, audience members will be encouraged to donate items which ACCESS will then distribute to food pantries throughout Kent County.
Items needed include non-perishables, canned goods and personal care items. Most needed items are soup, peanut butter, cereal, canned fruits, rice, pasta products, boxed dinners, canned meat, diapers, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.
There are over 20,600 individuals being served each month by the network of food pantries (100) in Kent County. One-third of those households are new to the pantry system, and about 50 percent are children. Food pantries provide items to the public that are greatly needed but are not available from other sources. Food drives also raise awareness about hunger in our communities, provide opportunities to respond and build community as we partner together to address the critical issue of poverty and hunger.
ACCESS West Michigan's mission is "Linking congregational, individual, and community resources with human needs and helping eliminate poverty in Kent County." ACCESS works with over 300 Kent County congregations, facilitates various food drives, coordinates the network of 100 Kent County food pantries, and offers education and advocacy programs to the community.
