The Women in the Arts Festival has for over 30 years celebrated the work of regional artists and takes place annually during the second weekend of November in East Lansing. This year, from Friday, Nov. 8, through Saturday, Nov. 9, women from near and far will congregate at the Edgewood United Church to showcase their talents.
"The festival features a huge artist market, musicians, poets and other creative arts as a symbol of our commitment to support women in the creative pursuits," write event organizers. "WITA is a volunteer-run organization with the goal of creating space for creative women to showcase their talents."
Featured this year on Friday at 7:30 p.m. is Natalia Zukerman's musical presentation of "The Women Who Rode Away," which is co-produced with The Ten Pound Fiddle. Bill Hurley of The Extended Play Sessions said that it "speaks of empowerment, struggle, tolerance, perseverance and history" and that its timing could "not be more poignant."
On Saturday at 6 p.m. duo Nia & Ness will perform. The black, lesbian, dancer-poet performance art couple is based out of Brooklyn, New York, and has performed nationwide since 2013.
".. Their work that aims at a deeper understanding of their co-reality through intense investigation of their individual identities," wrote event organizers.
