Washtenaw Residents To Rally Or Protest

By BTL Staff

ANN ARBOR – The Jim Toy Community Center will host a rally or a protest on the day the 6th Circuit Court announces its decision in the DeBoer v. Snyder marriage quality case.

The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals is currently considering the lawsuit along with cases from three other states: Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio. If the court upholds the decision made on March 21 by Federal Judge Bernard Friedman in favor of marriage equality, residents will celebrate from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Braun Court, located on the corner of North Fourth Avenue and Catherine Street. If the Court strikes down the ruling, residents will protest.

Hundreds of same-sex couples in Washtenaw, Ingham, Oakland and Muskegon Counties obtained marriage licenses the day following Friedman's decision on March 21st.

Gov. Rick Snyder continues to deny those married couples the same rights and privileges as heterosexual couples.

"The Appeals Court's decision will affect the lives of so many of my friends," JTCC Board President Sandi Smith said. "This is a simple matter of justice and equality – fundamental American values – for all people." JTCC is the Washtenaw Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center.

Writers of the 6th Circuit Court Blog, http://www.sixthcircuitappellateblog.com/, anticipate a ruling in late September or early October, although the Court has not issued any announcement about a specific date.

Other locations are on board with celebrating or protesting on the day of the decision. Michigan for Marriage is keeping track of those events online.
