Ruth Ellis Center Appoints Pamela E. Alexander Program Director

HIGHLAND PARK — Pamela E. Alexander, MUP, MSA, NCAC II, CADC, ICADC, has joined Ruth Ellis Center as Program Director. As Program Director, Pamela is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, management, supervision and evaluation of the Center's programs in accordance with the national standards set out by Ruth Ellis Center.
"When the opportunity presented itself to work at the Ruth Ellis Center, I expressed my deepest gratitude and honor in serving at-risk lesbian, gay, bi-attractional, transgender and questioning young people," said Ms. Alexander. "The move is an exciting opportunity to work with dedicated staffs that are making a difference in the lives of LGBTQ youth."
Pamela's professional career has focused on more than 25 years of experience in working in the human service field, and, more specifically, working with youth from at-risk homes. She has an extensive management background in program development and compliance. She is credentialed in the field of substance disorders at the state, national and international levels. Pamela has a long history as an activist in the LGBTQ community and she is one of the founding members and President of the Detroit Regional LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce.
Established in 1999, the Ruth Ellis Center continues to be one of the nation's leading experts on LGBTQ youth who are experiencing homelessness. REC operates four core programs: Ruth's House, a full-time residential program that is a State of Michigan licensed Child Caring Institution for LGBTQ youth in foster care; Second Stories Drop-In Center, offering resources such as full meals, support groups, leadership opportunities and more; Second Stories Outpatient Mental Health Services, providing individual, family and group counseling to youth and young adults; and the Street Outreach Program, a federally funded program which utilizes peer-to-peer strategies to effectively engage youth in support services.
All programs and services follow the center's four core principles of work: harm reduction, trauma-informed care, positive youth development and transformative justice.
Charitable donations allow REC to create forums and infrastructure to support not only a youth-driven space, but also youth-driven initiatives. REC values and relies on the support of its donors and volunteers. Individuals and corporations can ensure that REC continues to have the ongoing financial resources necessary to make a positive and significant difference in the lives of LGBTQ runaway, homeless and at-risk youth.
