Ingham Celebrates Marriage Equality

By the time Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum closed down her offices Friday, June 26, she had issued 26 marriage licenses and performed 16 ceremonies herself. She was definitely the first in Michigan to perform a same-sex marriage after the Supreme Court made it legal nationwide, and may have been the first in the nation.
Between The Lines and media partner Lansing Online News caught up with Byrum as she performed the wedding for Colleen Johnson and Ellen Ives. The couple have been together for over 24 years. Watching the wedding were their sons, Sam Johnson Ives and Aidan Ives Johnson, and friend Emma Franzel.
