LGBT-friendly Saugatuck and its famed retreat, the Dunes Resort, has renamed its Saugatuck Women's Weekend to "Go Girl Saugatuck." "We've always produced great women-themed events for lesbians at our resort. It's time to keep the party going with a 'woman's touch,'" said Mike Jones, Dunes Operations and Entertainment Director.
The aim of Go Girl Saugatuck! is to offer women an event rebranded with their interests and party plans in mind. DJ All the Way Kay from Chicago and Detroit's DJ Lena will serve up house and fresh dance music to a packed dance floor. Mimi Gonzalez is a comedian and native Michigander who's been invited to recreate the Dunes Resort's traditional women's weekend this June 3-5. Gonzalez has added a comedy and music show on Saturday to promote women's voices in song and laughter. "Go Girl Saugatuck will combine all I've learned from my years as a featured performer in Provincetown, on Olivia trips and at MichFest," she said.
The Dunes Resort has long been the Lake Michigan destination for vacationing LGBT Midwesterners and this year celebrates its 35 year anniversary. Like so many LGBT clubs, the demographic of attendees leans heavily toward men, but the men of the Dunes have consistently supported visibility and access for women. Newly-minted promoter Gonzalez said, "We used to call each other 'family' when I was coming out. The guys at the Dunes are committed to holding space for their sisters and remind me of that good old school feeling."
One cover charge affords entry to the entire complex and all events within. "Another great thing about the Dunes is how affordable it is," said Gonzalez. The Friday fee is $10 and Saturday's is $15. The Go Girl Saugatuck! weekend event can be purchased together at the discounted rate of $20.
