LGBT Staffers Presented with Presidential Award

WASHINGTON D.C. – Lead members of LGBT Detroit were honored May 20 during the BMe (Black Male Engagement) Leaders Award Ceremony held at the White House.
Curtis Lipscomb, David Nelson, Jr. and Nathan Strickland, Jr., were presented with the president's Volunteer Service Award for their hard work, dedication and passion for the community that they serve. For the last two decades, LGBT Detroit — formerly known as KICK — has actively engaged in supporting the Detroit LGBT community, providing safe environments for members of their community to have open conversations, while also providing a space for people to advocate for change and celebrate who they truly are.
In addition to receiving the award, the LGBT Detroit staff will participate in the "Better Together Challenge" to help orchestrate a sustainable program in support of Detroit's LGBT Community.
BMe's 2016 Better Together Challenge is an opportunity for BMe community leaders from Baltimore, Detroit or Philadelphia to work together on a project that demonstrates the impact of BMe community leadership within their city. Many leaders have already been working together, and this now is a chance for that work to be nationally elevated and supported. Types of projects for the Better Together Challenge include business development support, acquiring or developing housing or other property, financial instruments like revolving loan funds, job training, and ways to finance education.
The national award also honored leaders from Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. Akron and Pittsburgh.
BMe is a network of individuals from all walks of life that make their life's work rebuilding the communities around them. The organization, built with the support of black fathers and community members, has made its imprint across the country through mentoring youth, coaching and creating sustainable businesses and environments for neighborhoods.
