Trans Sisters of Color Project Hosts Memorial BBQ

BTL STAFF
DETROIT – The Trans Sistas of Color Project – Detroit will host its first annual "REMEMBERING OUR FALLEN ANGELS" BBQ at Palmer Park at the Blue Spruce Tree near the Fountain.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. July 27 and will include a candle lighting and remembrance ceremony beginning at 8:15 p.m.
"The Remembering Our Fallen Angels BBQ centers the lives of local transgender women of color that we have lost over the years," John A. Trimble, TSOCP deputy director said. "While we will also pay homage to the 12 trans people of color who have been murdered this year, we felt it was really important to remember those we have lost in Detroit in the way that Detroit knows how to."
In the last four years, 61 trans and or gender non-conforming men and women have been killed. Numbers have been on the rise with 13 reported trans people killed in 2013, 12 in 2014 and 21 in 2015. However, those numbers are greatly influenced by whether or not the murder was reported correctly by media and the police and whether the victim was recognized as trans in death.
"The BBQ was created in response to a call to action by Jeynce Mizrahi, a Detroit trans and Ballroom community leader," Bre Anne Campbell, TSOC executive director said. "TSOCP is supporting and answering that call to action by creating space for the community to grieve, mourn, celebrate and fellowship."
An altar will be built around pictures of people who have passed on with mementos to honor their memories. Special candles made by The TSOCP Detroit founding members board will provide special candles for those participating in the lighting ceremony. Anyone attending can add to the altar and participate in the candle lighting ceremony. Pictures and video will be taken to commemorate the moment.
Food will be provided by TSOCP and prepared by Chef Devel.
Palmer Park is located at 910 Merrill Plaisance St. in Detroit.
