Billy Eichner Will Be the First Out Gay Man to Write, Star in Studio Rom-Com, Actor Tweets 'Move Over, Julia Roberts'

Were you hoping that one day Billy Eichner would get the big-screen debut he deserves? That it would be super gay? And that a major studio would distribute it?

Hope no more! Eichner is starring in "Bros," the rarest kind of big-budget, big-studio feature film. The kind that, The Wrap reports, will feature two gay leads "as they each try to maybe, possibly, probably stumble towards love." It was announced today that the film, a Universal Pictures release, will hit theaters Aug. 12, 2022.

"I honestly can't believe it," the "American Horror Story" star tweeted. "Move over, Julia Roberts. There's a new rom-com queen in town!"

In a separate tweet, the actor triumphantly celebrated a major milestone for gay representation.

"In shocking news, 'Bros' will be the first rom com about gay men ever produced by a major studio and, apparently, I'm the first openly gay man to ever write and star in their own studio film," he wrote. "Only took 100 years! THANKS HOLLYWOOD!!!"

In addition to starring in "Bros," Eichner co-wrote the film with Nicholas Stoller ("Neighbors," "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"), who will direct. Comedy titan Judd Apatow will produce. The gay-led film will join a growing numbers of LGBTQ+-inclusive rom-coms like the gay tween coming-of-age love story "Love, Simon" and last year's Kristen Stewart-led holiday Hulu flick "Happiest Season."
