Come out with Ruthie and Connie

By Eartha Melzer

Ruthie Berman and Connie Kurtz, Jewish lesbians who successfully fought for domestic partnership benefits in New York City are the subjects of a documentary, Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in The House.
Ruthie and Connie will speak at the film screening at the Unitarian Universalist church in Traverse City on October 13 at 7:30 p.m. They will also visit Affirmations youth group in Ferndale October 11 at 7 p.m.
Their visits are sponsored by Project YES (Youth for Equality and Safety) a statewide project housed at Eastern Michigan University that seeks to eliminate heterosexism and homophobia in agencies that serve youth.
"We are building a Project YES "hub" in Traverse City," said Kathleen Russell of Project Yes, "At this time it includes social services provision, support of the Windfire group, and several additional components. We are working together to create and fund a .5 FTE position that when filled will allow a person to have 20 hours a week of LGBT inclusive responsibility specific to the safety of LGBTQ youth and their needs."
In Ferndale Ruthie and Connie will meet with Affirmations youth group to model role models and mentors and comment on long-term relationships.
