Let's hear it for this week's Creep, Vice President Dick Cheney for yet again demonstrating that Bush administration politics trump his lesbian daughter Mary every time.
Cheney's steely exterior may have seemed momentarily softened by his declaration during the 2004 election that "freedom means freedom for everybody," but the man just hasn't done a lot to back that claim up and campaigning for the reelection of the very author of the anti-gay Federal Marriage Amendment isn't exactly strengthening his case for father of the year.
On May 9 Cheney raised about $200,000 for Colorado Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, calling her "exactly the right person for the job" (to discriminate against people like my daughter, he should have added).
Musgrave has been pegged as vulnerable in the 2006 election and is bringing out the fundraising guns early. Let's hope Colorado Democrats get it together and defeat her.
Needless to say, gay Democrats scorned Cheney's support of Musgrave. "These actions underscore the hypocrisy of the Bush administration which claims to support families but actually works against us," Eric Stern, National Stonewall Democrats executive director told http://365Gay.com.
The Cheney's have all received flack for their pseudo-support of lesbian and gay rights – including Mary herself. Perhaps Mary will shed some light on the issue in her pending memoir which is scheduled to be published by Simon & Schuster. Stay tuned.
